The Phacops appears in groups of two or three in battle in the Xylophone Tower of the Shining Keys and sometimes alongside Black Golds.
Its normal attacks are piercing and clawing attacks on all at melee range. It tends to use several of these in swift succession and then follow them up with a Smash, a Special Attack that is a whack on the head with its tail that can cause knockdown. If it is at a distance, it may use Rampage, in which it curls into a ball and then rolls through targets in a line.
It has fairly high HP and can do a lot of damage, as its normal attacks in particular can be challenging to Guard against. If it manages to hit with several of these, then try to at least Guard against the final Smash attack, the Guard for which will usually still be offered. Occasionally it will use Rampage to charge through targets that are far away, but it is more likely to simply close distance to use its melee attacks, and it often moves fairly slowly. It may be better to let it simply come to your characters, allowing them a longer turn to finish it off. It has a high SPD stat, so it will often get the first turn against slower characters, even if they are somewhat overleveled.
In Encore Mode, take extra care to avoid a back-attack and definitely avoid grouping your characters together unless they are overleveled. Be ready with powerful Harmony Chains and don't hesitate to heal up if these manage to hit with several powerful attacks.
- In the PlayStation 3 version of Eternal Sonata, the amount of EXP granted for defeating the Phacops was reduced by nearly half, but its HP was increased by over 10000 points.
