The Black Gold initially appears alone in battle in the Xylophone Tower of the Shining Keys. It later appears in groups of two, then three, and sometimes alongside Phacops. Several of these guard the spiral pathways up the Xylophone Tower and once defeated, they do not reappear, though this opponent can still be battled in the area just before the tower bosses.
Its normal physical attacks are an arm whack and a fist pound with a chance of knockback. Iron Fist is an energy fist attack on a single target with a chance of knockdown. Level Slap is a powerful blow on targets in a line or grouped together and also carries a chance of knockdown. Finally, Seer's Ray is a ray of fire in a line, and this too carries a chance of knockdown.
The Black Gold is a powerful opponent with a lot of moves with knockback and knockdown attacks that can temporarily disable targets. It is also a large target, however, and therefore easily attacked. Only stronger characters will likely be able to defeat in one turn, and distance attackers can be a help by forcing to use up a large of its turn by moving around, or only being able to attack targets at melee. In larger groups, however, they can easily gain the advantage by ganging up on a target.
In Encore Mode, these can pack an extremely powerful punch, easily capable of KOing a character in a single turn. Be ready with Angel Trumpets or Goddess Bouquets to revive, and make sure the party includes at least one of either Frederic, Polka, Serenade, or Viola for healing.
- In the PlayStation 3 version of Eternal Sonata, the amount of EXP granted for defeating this opponent was reduced by over 2000 points, but its HP was increased by over 20000.
